The Maxima Wagon Site

Welcome! I will be adding info on my "restoration" of this 1988 Nissan Maxima Wagon. Why choose this car?- It's a long story.

UPDATED 2/12/02

BRIEF HISTORY
At one point, between my brother and I, we owned 3 Maxima wagons. I owned two-my original wagon was totalled (bad front end hit) in a car accident shortly after moving to NJ. I had put considerable effort into mechanicals on that car and hated to lose it. I decided to keep it and find a donor vehicle that I could improve using my original vehicle for parts. This car/eng has 149Kon it and Maximas of this vintage are known for going well over 250K so I plan on getting a few more years out of her. I also figured that doing the work myself would allow me to develop the skills needed for the future restoration of a classic(a Porsche 356)-my ultimate goal here.

Picture Gallery
Images of rust repair. New wheel well archs MIG welded in place. Body Filler to seal weld seams and application of 2K primer/surfacer to smooth everything out. Images of the Finished Product(these are in color). The clear coat finish didn't come out perfect everywhere but for the most part it came out well for a first time job and is probably better than a big chain special. It is definitley infinitely better than what it was and the rust repair areas at the wheel wells came out better than I hoped. I ran out of weather this year so I will wait until spring to reinstall some trim pieces and repair some of the clear.

Materials:
I will be using Glasurit products.
2K primer surfacer
55-Line base coat (original Nissan Code: 418 std)
High Solids clear coat
Evercoat body fillers
Eurosoft polyester glazing putty
Dynatron Ultraglass body filler(waterproof for over weld seams)

Completing this project took a lot more time and effort (and money) than expected, but they always do. It would take several pages to describe what I learned from the process but in a word, patience, was the critical factor. No step can be rushed. My wife is happy it's over and happy that she has a new looking car again.
